What are the signs and symptoms of substance abuse?

  • Preoccupation - Preoccupied with drinking or using drugs
  • Tolerance - The need to drink or use greater amounts of alcohol or drugs to get "high."
  • Physical Dependence - Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety after stopping drinking or using drugs.
  • Craving - A strong need, or urge, to drink or use drugs.
  • Mood Swings - Nervousness, irritability, oversensitivity
  • School/Work Performance - Skipping school or work, or arriving late on a regular basis.
  • Eating Habits - Loss of appetite or increase in appetite; noticeable weight loss or gain.
  • Cash - Unexplained need for money or valuables go missing around the home.
  • Trouble with the Law - DWI, possession, theft, etc.
